Background

Medal is a platform that allows users to easily capture and share moments from their favorite online experiences, such as gaming, streaming, and more. Medal 3.0 is the latest iteration of the platform, bringing a variation of enhancements and new features to the platform.

Problem

As plans for the next version of the platform began to take shape, the team found themselves faced with the challenging task of determining the focal points for this significant update. Amidst the excitement of crafting an enhanced experience for users, there was a sense of uncertainty regarding which specific features or improvements should take precedence in the development roadmap.

Objective

Lead the decision-making process that was influenced by various factors, including user feedback, industry trends, competitive analysis, and the overarching vision for the platform's future direction. Work closely with cross functional team members to carefully evaluate the potential impact of each proposed enhancement on user engagement, retention, and overall satisfaction.

The first step was to empathize with our users by talking to them directly and asking them what they want in the Medal 3.0 update

Asking users what they want in the next update

With the dedicated feedback page we were able to speak directly to our users. Users are able to suggest new ideas and vote on existing ideas, giving us an extensive list of wants and needs right from the source.

Knowing our users

Frequently connecting with our users has given us insight into all the different types: Creators, Gamers and Viewers.

The next step was to conceptualize a strategy, overwhelmed with possible solutions we needed to work together to figure out which ones should be in the update

Brainstorming with the team to make sense of our research

I organized a working session with members from different cross functional teams to help sort through all the data that was gathered in the research, a combination of insights from talking to users and data from the analytics.

Updating our user flow with the new features/improvements for the update

During the workshop we had chosen which features/improvements we wanted to make in the medal 3.0 update, so I needed to integrate those changes into the current flow. By mapping out the new flow with the proposed changes I was able to ensure that the update works within the current system.

Proposing 4 main improvements for the Medal 3.0 update:
  1. Sessions: A dedicated space for users to play games with one another and share clips from that session in a designated public or private space. Users in a Session can interact with each other through voice and text chat as well as editing each other’s clips and reposting to their own accounts in real-time. Users can also join to see what other players have captured from the most recent session and then engage with those clips and socialize with one another.

  2. Multiple Clip Syncing: When one person in a session clips, everyone playing with that person in-game, clips at the same moment to provide multiple-perspectives for a complete view of the given moment. Game clips are automatically uploaded to the Sessions cloud so players can view every clip taken immediately once they have ended the session.

  3. Chat Features: New voice and text chat features have been added throughout, including new emotes, custom reactions, and more.

  4. The new super-powered editor: Users no longer need to leave medal and use After Effects or Premiere. Medal 3.0’s new simple, yet powerful, editing platform introduces even more editing features such as: slowmo, speed up, zoom, freeze frame, blur, loop, color editing, transitions and more.

Now that all the new features had been chosen, it was time to Design

A new home page & sessions

The home page received a significant UI update along with a huge new feature, sessions, a dedicated space for users to play games with one another and share clips from that session in a designated public or private space. Users can access sessions from the new section in the header, where they can join existing groups or create their own.

Starting a session & Onboarding

Creating your own session is easy, simply name it and set your privacy preferences. With sessions being a completely new feature to the platform, onboarding was necessary to showcase all the new features, highlighting their benefits, and avoid confusion and frustration.

Inviting friends to join you

Once you have the session set up, it's time to invite friends to join you be searching for them or easily inviting friends you gamed with recently.

A live session with friends

Users in a Session can interact with each other through voice and text chat as well as editing each other’s clips and reposting to their own accounts in real-time. Users can also join to see what other players have captured from the most recent session and then engage with those clips and socialize with one another.

Managing settings and published clips

Easily take control and manage the settings of the session as well as keep track of all the clips you published from the session.

Viewing all your clips

With 2 new layout options, users can see all their clips in more ways than ever.

Viewing your clips in full screen

Leveling up the editor

Users no longer need to leave medal and use After Effects or Premiere. Medal 3.0’s new simple, yet powerful, editing platform introduces even more editing features such as: slowmo, speed up, zoom, freeze frame, blur, loop, color editing, transitions, meme templates and filters made by the community and more.

We also added the ability to edit on iOS and Android to bring even more powerful editing to users’ fingertips.
